Why do people eat a lot
Why some people can eat so much junk without gaining weight
How metabolism and genes affect diet and figure differently.
Everyone knows such people (or is affected by them): While others make sure to control their diet and eat healthily, they eat chips, candy or fast food without ceasing and simply do not gain weight. But don't calorie data apply equally to all people? Apparently not, and that has now even been scientifically investigated.
A new study found that bodies respond very differently to food intake. Specifically, the glycemic index - how food influences blood sugar - is not as stable as it was previously often assumed. When the glycemic index is often incorrect and everyone's blood sugar reacts differently, that explains why diets often fail to deliver what they promise. "If two people eat exactly the same thing, it doesn't mean they weigh the same," says Dr. Judith Korner from Columbia University. "There are genes that determine how much we can eat."
1) You have good genes
According to Dr. Korner genes set a "target value" for the body, with the weight that the body would like to hold. For some it can be a BMI of 22, for others a BMI of 28 or 30, depending on genes and hormones. Anyone who tries to change this point is fighting against their own body. There have been studies that suggest that the body keeps trying to come back to this weight, regardless of the initial figure. For some people, this makes losing weight very difficult because the body torpedoed it with stronger hunger signals and a lower metabolism.
2) You have a turbo metabolism
The logic behind losing weight is actually very simple: you have to consume fewer calories than you burn in a day. But people's basal metabolic rate varies greatly and depends more on their metabolism than on how many hours they sweat in the gym. Three quarters of the calories we burn daily come only from the basal metabolic rate and therefore cannot be changed. Although factors such as age, physique, and gender also affect metabolism, it is largely innate: "This is just like how some people were born with blue eyes and others with green eyes," says Dr. Korner.
3) You eat less high energy foods
This ever-thin acquaintance might just like to eat less high-calorie things, it makes a difference whether you eat a kilo of salad or a kilo of schnitzel. "Some people seem like they are eating all the time, but in fact they are not eating foods that are so energetic," said Dr. Korner. Chronically thin people may not feel like they are limiting themselves, and they also chew all the time, but what they eat allows them to consume higher amounts.
4) They probably don't actually eat THAT much
The truth is also relative and different perceptions make a big difference. Many people do not pay too much attention to their calorie intake when they are out with friends and want to relax. Even if they ate more chicken nuggets last night than you eat in an entire month, their long-term diet is likely to be more modest. Because if you really eat thousands of calories a day, you will also gain weight. "A lot of people tell me that they don't lose weight, but then you look at their food diary and they have just eaten granola bars and thought that would be healthy anyway. It is thermodynamically not possible to eat less than you burn, and still not to decrease ".
The bottom line is that all bodies function differently, and the best nutrition plan is always the one that works for you.
