Definition of electronegativity

Electronegativity is a relative measure of the ability of an atom to attract electron pairs in a chemical bond. It is determined, among other things, by the nuclear charge and the atomic radius.

Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract more electrons and hold them thanks to a chemical bond.

Two groups can be distinguished: Atoms that strongly attract the valence electrons of other atoms (high electronegativity).

This group includes non-metals such as fluorine, oxygen and nitrogen.

Atoms whose valence electrons are attracted (low electronegativity; also called electropositivity).

These include alkali metals such as fracium, cesium, rubidium and potassium.
