What is the average lifespan of a car?

When buying a new car, it's not only about personal taste, make or model, but above all about durability. What is the mileage of a car and how long can I count on it to get me from A to B without any problems? Although there are figures on the average lifespan of cars, these do not answer all of the questions.

How long does a car last?

When it comes to cars, the past is often glorified. Old cars have the reputation of being built to last, while new vehicles only have an extremely short life expectancy due to sensitive technical parts. That is of course not correct.

While only a few long-running favorites with robust engines and a solid construction actually made it into the seven-digit kilometer range, a number of models fell victim to rust after a comparatively short time and developed into real flops.

At the same time, not every modern car is designed for short driving pleasure. On the contrary! Targeted and long-term research ensures that sources of error can be discovered and minimized faster and faster, so that modern cars will keep their owners happy for a long time.

In addition, you prevent corrosion and wear by galvanizing and thus protect potentially endangered parts as a precaution. Anyone who chooses their vehicle primarily for durability and reliability does not have to fall back on the old treasures, but will also find what they are looking for in the models from recent years.

If you measure the average lifespan of cars in years, the first thing is good news: According to various studies, cars run for a full twelve years. According to Statista, however, cars are only driven for an average of nine and a half years in Germany. For the last few years, many vehicles will then be going abroad.

But the time before the cars are sold has also increased significantly. The cars are being driven almost three years longer than in the 1990s. Initially, this clearly speaks for the increasing quality and better workmanship of the wagons. However, the useful life can also be misleading. Vehicles that are moved different times and for different lengths of time are difficult to compare.

When buying a used car, the age of the vehicle may be a clue, but in the end it shouldn't be the only selling point. If a car has been used significantly more frequently and intensively than its older counterpart in a short period of time, it is not unlikely that it was exposed to greater wear in comparison.

At the same time, many short journeys and long downtimes can also have negative effects on a car, but the greater damage is usually caused by intensive use. So if you're wondering how long a car will last, a car's mileage is just as important as its average lifespan.

The average mileage of a car is initially around 300,000 kilometers. However, the range here is extremely high and depends on many factors. Some vehicles barely reach the 200,000 kilometer mark, while others hardly show any signs of fatigue even after well over 400,000 kilometers. However, such high mileage is clearly the exception.

What does the mileage of cars depend on?

First of all, it always depends on the human factor. Careful driving and usage behavior can significantly extend the life of a car. Frequent short trips, during which the engine does not get hot enough, are just as bad as trips in the very high speed range. If the vehicle is moved regularly and used for long distances, life expectancy also increases.

Regular and careful maintenance is also important. This includes in particular the timely oil change, which has to be done differently depending on the model. The relevant information can be found in the manual for the car. In addition, you shouldn't save on oil and invest in good quality, as poor quality oil can damage the engine.

Maintenance is also an important step on the way to a long car life. They detect and repair any damage at an early stage. Regardless of the indicator lights in the vehicle, regular inspections should be carried out in a specialist workshop in order to significantly extend the life expectancy of the car.

Unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise or the indicator lights are flashing, it is advisable to have a major inspection carried out at least every 20,000 kilometers or after two years. With frequent use, however, an earlier inspection may be necessary.

While earlier vehicles were sometimes notorious for their sensitivity to rust, modern cars mostly score points in this category. The susceptibility to rust was often at least minimized by galvanizing large parts of the body, even if corrosion can of course never be completely ruled out. Classic wear damage has also decreased overall as a result, which has a positive effect on the average service life of the cars.

The most common reason for deciding whether to return or exchange the old car is therefore the engine. Engine repair is often particularly costly and often exceeds the vehicle's residual value. An engine failure in a car with a long mileage or old age therefore very often means the end of its service life.

Differences between gasoline and diesel engines

According to a common view, the liter output of an engine is particularly decisive for its service life. Accordingly, the more power an engine generates per liter of displacement, the shorter its service life. Or the other way around: the more cubic capacity there is on one horsepower, the better for the life of the engine.

The explanation is simple: In order to generate the same force, larger motors have to turn less than smaller ones. Accordingly, there is less friction and vibrations, and the material wears out more slowly.

In the past, diesel engines had more cubic capacity compared to gasoline engines with the same output and thus worked with less wear, which earned them the reputation of living longer. Today, turbochargers ensure that diesel engines achieve the same horsepower as gasoline engines with approximately the same size. Nevertheless, they stay in a slightly lower speed range.

Another supposed advantage of diesel engines in terms of longevity is the fact that they are more stable because they have to withstand higher pressures. On the other hand, these pressures naturally also represent a burden that can in turn be used against the diesel.

Ultimately, one can argue that diesel tends to be used by frequent drivers and therefore on rather long journeys, since the higher purchase and tax costs only pay off after a certain frequency of use, as the fuel costs are lower. Use over longer journeys benefits the engine life, since unlike short journeys, the engine has enough time to reach its optimum operating temperature.

However, since both diesel and gasoline engines have converged overall, one should rather look at factors such as purchase, maintenance costs, taxes, insurance, fuel prices and consumption in order to make a purchase decision. Regardless of this, it is possible to make basic statements about the average service life of cars with gasoline and diesel engines.

The average life of a gasoline engine

Since the petrol engine reaches its operating temperature more quickly, it is easier to drive over short distances than the diesel version. The mileage of a gasoline engine is of course also dependent on the driving style and maintenance.

With a new petrol engine, it is assumed that the vehicle has driven almost 200,000 kilometers. With the right handling, however, this can also improve significantly. The durability of the gasoline engine with turbo has also been greatly optimized, so that the former weak point of the engine is no longer negatively affected.

The average life of a diesel engine

There is no general answer to how many kilometers a diesel engine will last. With careful handling and regular maintenance, a vehicle with a diesel engine can cover well over 200,000 kilometers. However, if there is major damage, the repair is often no longer financially worthwhile. Especially when the car is often used for long distances, this generally increases life expectancy.

Which engine lasts longer - diesel or gasoline?

The question of which engine will last longer cannot really be answered conclusively. Regardless of whether it is a diesel or gasoline engine, it is generally important to note that it is seldom the engines themselves that give up the ghost in older cars, but rather the engine components. In addition, how well an engine is designed and manufactured by the manufacturer plays a major role. There are legendary engines and well-known problem engines. Ultimately, the individual driving behavior also determines the service life.
