Simple tips to remove pesticides from fruits and vegetables

Modern agriculture means that we are exposed to many pesticides today. The surfaces of fresh fruit and vegetables in particular are often contaminated with pesticides.

Immerse in vinegar solution

Some pesticides contain certain chemicals that are absorbed through the peel of fruits and vegetables. An easy way to get rid of these unwanted chemicals is to soak the food in a vinegar solution before consuming it.

The vinegar solution should consist of 90% water and 10% white vinegar (for example 900 ml water and 100 ml vinegar). Soak the food in it for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash it off with clean warm water.

This method should not be used on slightly fragile fruits such as berries. The very porous skin of the fruit can be damaged and too much vinegar can flow into the fruit.

Anti-pesticide spray

Another way to clean the fruits and vegetables is with an anti-pesticide spray. It is very easy to make an anti-pesticide spray yourself using natural foods. To do this, mix 1 cup of water with 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice and 2 tablespoons of baking powder and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray the fruit and vegetables generously with the spray and let the mixture work for a few minutes. Then rinse the food with warm water.

There are several ways to get rid of a majority of the pesticides. Foods in particular, such as apples, strawberries, grapes, celery, peaches, spinach, peppers, nectarines, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and potatoes, often contain a lot of pesticides. In order to reduce the risk of pesticides, these foods should preferably be bought in organic quality.

Foods that often contain fewer pesticides include avocados, pineapples, cabbage, onions, mangoes, and melon.
