Psychology is one of the most popular subjects in Germany, because psychological knowledge and methods are also becoming increasingly important in the business world. But what does psychology actually mean? What does the term stand for and what does it actually mean? Why should you study psychology? Which aspects do you learn during your studies and where can the path lead you after your studies? We want to answer these and other questions in detail below!
Psychology in its official definition is always called "the science of human experience and behavior" designated. But what does it exactly mean? The term psychology is made up of the ancient Greek words psyché (German breath, soul, mind) and logos (dt. the teaching) together. Psychology describes and explains people and their development under all internal and external conditions and influences. Perception and awareness are just as much a part of the research area of psychology as language and emotions.
Psychologists examine what is defined as "normal" by the majority of society as well as any deviations within behavior and experience, behavior being a very broad concept. The subject of investigation by psychologists is the entire inner workings of the human being perception about the Feelings up to thoughts and memories.
Since our soul life, in contrast to our actions, cannot be observed from the outside, one of the great questions in psychology is: "How can thoughts and feelings be explored?"
Psychologists use different methods and approaches for this purpose. The best known method is self-disclosure about one's inner life. In addition, modern technology is also playing an increasingly important role in psychology. Information is obtained with the help of measurements. So brain waves can now be measured electronically and the determination of the blood flow in the brain is no longer a problem. Because the brain is the focus of these studies, psychology is definitely interdisciplinary oriented and also includes medicine, biology and mathematics.
Why study psychology?
Why are we humans the way we are - and not different? Why does someone behave like this in a certain situation and another completely different? Human behavior and the human psyche piqued our interest centuries ago. We want to explore, discover and understand. Plato and Aristotle were already fascinated by human behavior, our psyche and soul. To this day, this need for discovery and understanding has not changed. Many prospective students and graduates give the reason for their decision that the appeal of psychology lies in exploring the psyche.
Today one can find psychological concepts and structures in almost all areas of our life. Market research examines our buying behavior to find out which products sell particularly well and why. HR managers develop strategies so that employees feel comfortable in the workplace and become more productive. Sports psychologists look after competitive athletes and work on their mental strength in order to increase the athletic performance process. There are many other examples relating to the broad field of psychology. For many prospective students, however, it is also very clear the therapeutic approach in the foreground. You want to help and support people in their later professional life. In a survey, around 60 percent of psychology students said they had chosen this course of study "in order to be able to help people".
However, the notion that all graduates go into the therapeutic profession is wrong. For that is still necessary additional training. The professional world is as diverse as the psychology course with all its main focuses. One third of the graduates work in business after graduation, either in the field of Business psychology or the Industrial and organizational psychology. This deals with the topics of personnel management and the improvement of workplace situations in companies. The aim is to increase employee satisfaction and at the same time reduce the error rate and increase performance. The areas of school psychology, health psychology, legal psychology or media psychology also play a major role.
The possibilities that open up after studying psychology are versatile and varied. This is why there is so much interest in psychology among school leavers and freshmen. The career prospects are tempting.
Structure of the psychology degree
Psychology is an interdisciplinary subject. It cannot be fully assigned to any area, neither the natural sciences nor the social sciences or humanities. All of these subject areas are also part of the course. As a prospective student, one should therefore not underestimate the large number of scientific and mathematical topics. Statistics, for example, are part of the tools of every psychology student.
Over time, other disciplines have also discovered psychology for themselves. Psychology can now be found in many fields of study as a selectable focus subject. But this also results in a gain for the psychology study. A Variety of different psychology courseswhich combine the basics of psychology with other topics have emerged. These include, for example, the subjects of business psychology or legal psychology.
Many universities offer a degree in psychology, during which you have the opportunity to learn yourself to specialize in one or more disciplines. We explain which subject areas are within the course and what they deal with on our page on the psychology focal points!
Our tip: Since not every university offers every focus, it is advisable to inquire in advance at the universities in question which departments are part of the course.
Studying psychology with a specific specialization in a separate course of study? No problem! There are numerous exciting psychology courses in the fields of business, law, health or education!
