# How do you convert decimeters to centimeters?

## Conversion from meters (m) to decimeters (dm) and vice versa

Updated on by Stefan Banse

Here you can convert the length unit meter into the unit decimeter and vice versa decimeter to meter. By clicking on the "Swap units" symbol you will always see the desired conversion in the calculation result, i.e. m to dm or dm to m. You can also use the following calculator to calculate any other length unit.

The meter is the base unit for length in the International System of Units (SI) and in other metric systems.

All other units of length in the metric system are derived from the meter (e.g. 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 m = 1,000 mm).

In 1799, according to the measurements carried out at that time, the meter was defined as the ten millionth part of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. For this purpose, a so-called original meter was cast in platinum as a prototype. Since 1983, the meter has been defined as the distance that light travels in 1 / 299,792,458 of a second in a vacuum.

The unit decimeter belongs to the metric system and can be traced back to the base unit meter. 1 decimeter corresponds to 0.1 meters and 1 meter corresponds to 10 decimeters. The prefix "deci" for the decimeter stands for one tenth of the base unit.

This unit belongs to the international system of units (SI).
