Most countries in the world have laws that regulate when a couple can marry; and most states allow marriages by and to minors - i. H. under 18-year-olds under German law - including most of the countries of the European Union.

Based on an analysis of 198 states and territories listed on the “U.S. State Department country reports on human rights practices 2015 “, the PEW research center draws a corresponding map of the world: Minors are allowed to marry in at least 116 nations - usually a judicial or parental consent is required.

There are different minimum ages for women and men in 38 states. So z. B. In Bangladesh, women must be at least 18 years old and men at least 21 years old. In 37 states, the marriage age for women is younger than that of men.

Sudan has the largest gender difference: girls can marry when they are 10 years old, boys when they are 15 years old, without legal or parental permission.

Several states also have religious exception rules. For example, in the Philippines, a couple must be 21 years old to marry independently unless they are Muslim; Muslim boys can marry at the age of 15 and Muslim girls at puberty. And in Tanzania, Muslim and Hindu girls can marry when they are 12, provided that sexual intercourse does not take place until the girl is 15 years old.
